Bangladesh elects new president

Bangladesh has named Zillur Rahman as its new president after he was elected unopposed on Wednesday, the Election Commission announced.

The ruling Awami League veteran was scheduled to take the oath of office on Thursday at the presidential palace in the capital, Dhaka.

Mr Rahman, 79, who replaces outgoing President Iajuddin Ahmed, will resign as an MP.

The presidency of Bangladesh is a largely ceremonial post.
