US urges EU to ban Tamil rebels
The United States has asked the European Union to follow its lead and ban Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka.

Proscribing the group would help cut off financial supplies and weapons procurement, senior State Department official Donald Camp told reporters.

The US banned the rebels in 1997. The EU imposed travel curbs last October.

The US call came amid brief exchanges of fire in northern Jaffna peninsula. Troops and rebels blamed each other for starting the firing.

Truce monitors also said their monitoring of naval vessels remained temporarily suspended following a suicide attack on a naval convoy - with monitors aboard the vessel - last Thursday.
