Musharraf seeks new Muslim era
The president of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, has called - in a newspaper article published in the United States - for a Muslim renaissance: a new era in education, development and social justice in the Islamic world.

In the Washington Post article, the Pakistani leader evokes Islam's glorious past, but says the Muslim world has since closed its mind to change, remained in its shell and, as he puts it, been left behind in social, moral and economic development.

The Pakistani foreign ministry is hosting an international seminar in Islamabad on the challenges before the Organisation of Islamic Countries.

More than 50 scholars and academics from the 40 member states of the OIC are participating.
