Bengal strike supporters arrested
Police in the Indian state of West Bengal say they have arrested more than 1,000 supporters of a strike called by a regional opposition party to protest against tax increases.

The police say officers had to use batons to prevent violence by the protestors and to keep roads and railways open.

They deny opening fire as alleged by the opposition Trinamul Congress party.

A BBC correspondent in West Bengal says shops and markets in the state were closed during the one-day strike, and most private vehicles stayed off the roads, but that public transport functioned as normal.
