'Mob' attacks Indian institute
More than 70 people have been arrested in India after an attack on a prominent academic organisation, police say.

Police said the attack on the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune (roughly 150 kilometres east of Bombay) was carried out by members of a little-known hardline Hindu organisation.

They said more than 100 activists vandalised the Institute building and damaged books and documents.

According to police, the attackers were aggrieved because the institute had allegedly assisted an American author who had written a controversial biography of Shivaji - a historic figure venerated in western India.
