Police in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have arrested a nun carrying bundles of pamphlets glorifying one of India's most notorious bandits - Veerappan.

A journalist in the neighbouring state of Karnataka was arrested earlier in the day for having allegedly supplied the bandit with electronic equipment to help propagate his cause.

Police said the nun was arrested during a routine check of vehicles to prevent smuggling of liquor.

The nun was found carrying propaganda pamphlets glorifying the cause of the bandit and condemning the former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for trying to arrest him.

Derogatory contents

Police said the pamphlets had been printed by a Madras-based Tamil nationalist group.

They described the contents as extremely derogatory to the state's political parties and leaders.

They said the nun was a school headteacher and was also a student of law in Bangalore.

Police said they suspect she was involved with Tamil militant groups.

They said investigations are continuing into her exact role.

Veerappan has declared himself a Tamil nationalist.

The bandit, who is alleged to have killed more than 100 men and 1,000 elephants, was found to be in the company of some Tamil militants in June last year when he kidnapped a famous regional film star, Rajkumar.

Veerappan recently offered to surrender to the authorities but the offer was rejected by the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
