Castle in Spain going for a song
Coruna del Conde
The castle of Coruna del Conde is on sale for one euro
A medieval castle is for sale in northern Spain, for the knock-down price of one euro.

According to Spanish television, the only condition is that the buyer must restore the crumbling edifice.

Would you like to buy the medieval castle... You only have to pay one euro

The castle towers majestically over the village of Coruna del Conde, in Burgos Province, on the banks of the River Douro.

But it is threatening to collapse on to the houses below.

Local mayor Jose Angel Esteban says the castle is of "great historical and sentimental value for the village".

But the powers-that-be - in this case Castilla y Leon's regional government - will not provide the money to carry out the work.

The local authorities in Coruna del conde are trying to find a conscientious buyer for their castle
Mayor Esteban is worried the main tower may collapse

They say other, more important heritage sites are in even greater need of repair.

Now the local council is hoping to sell the castle to a conscientious buyer.

"Would you like to buy the medieval castle in Coruna del Conde?" reads a regional tourism website.

"If your answer is yes, you only have to pay one euro."

"Well, the one-euro price is symbolic, since you'll really need to invest on the castle's restoration and upkeep," it adds.

The village's 175 inhabitants want the site to be turned into a hotel or restaurant without its historic grandeur being lost.
