Jersey's deputy bailiff is to become the island's new bailiff in the summer.

Michael Birt, who was appointed deputy bailiff in 2000, will take over from Sir Philip Bailhache in the role when Sir Philip retires at the end of June.

The bailiff is responsible for heading the island's legal system and The States. Mr Birt's appointment has been approved by the Queen.

Mr Birt, 62, said he was honoured and promised to do his best at all times to serve the community.
