Walker warning after cow attack

A warning has been issued to walkers after a woman was seriously injured in a stampede by cows in the Isle of Man.

The 52-year-old, from Colby, was jostled and pushed over by the animals as she walked her dogs along a public footpath in a field near Gansey.

The woman spent five days in intensive care at Noble's Hospital.

The Manx government has said that cows can be "very protective" of their calves, and warned that the animals can be "unpredictable".

Dog warning

The Department of Transport said that the situation could often be made worse if dogs were present.

Walkers should keep dogs under close control and not try to protect their pets if attacked, the government said.

Minister for Transport David Anderson said: "It is vital that members of the public remember there are a lot of cows with calves in fields at the moment which have public footpaths going across them.

"Cows with young calves can be unpredictable and can cause serious injury to walkers and other animals.

"Always be aware of your surroundings and remember that, although you may not be able to see any animals from where you are, there is a chance that there could be livestock in other areas of the field."
