Timber on fire at Alderney dump

Police are investigating the cause of a fire at Alderney's rubbish dump.

The blaze took hold in a large stockpile of recycled wood at the island's impot.

Heavy plant machinery had to be moved clear of the site by emergency crews, and firefighters took just over an hour to put out the flames.

They spent several more hours at the site damping down. The brigade said the fire could have spread further if winds had been blowing in another direction.

Crews were called to the impot at about 0530 BST on Wednesday.
