Cafe struggles after tree falls
Fallen tree
Experts are still trying to work out why the Turkey oaks came down
A cafe owner in one of Guernsey's prime tourist sites claims it is losing holiday trade because of the closure of a children's playground nearby.

The play area at Saumarez Park remains shut while experts make the area safe after two Turkey oaks fell there three weeks ago.

It occurred as the tearooms were gearing up for one of its busiest times of the year.

Manager Salvatore Cacace says his business is suffering as a result.

Still closed

He said: "At the moment we're just starting and we were preparing for a big six weeks of work and on the first Wednesday we had this terrible news which changed everything around.

"There was a bit of panic because the tree came down. Since then, it's gone on and on and on."

Experts are still trying to work out why all of the Turkey oaks came down. Some signs of fungal decay were found.

Officials say they want to be sure of the cause before the playground is reopened.
