Expansion of Schengen area
Security co-operation was boosted before the Schengen expansion
Nine more countries in Europe have joined the Schengen area, which allows people to move freely across borders.

This will bring to nearly 25 the number of European countries with open borders.

The Schengen agreement is supported by many businesses but its critics fear it will allow illegal immigrants and criminals to move around the continent unchecked.
