In quotes: Irving jailed

British historian David Irving has been found guilty in Vienna of denying the Holocaust of European Jewry and sentenced to three years in prison.

Lord Janner, chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust

It is the conviction and not the sentence that matters. It sends a clear message to the world that we must not tolerate the denial of the mass murders of the Holocaust. The Nazis tried to wipe out an entire people. They murdered every one of my family on the continent, except those who lived in Denmark. We must learn the lessons of the past to built a decent society for the future. Irving's conviction, especially in Austria which was a former Nazi country, is important and appropriate.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Wiesenthal Center

Today's sentencing confirms David Irving as a bigot and an anti-Semite and also serves a direct challenge to the Iranian regime's embrace of Holocaust denial.

Deborah Lipstadt, academic

I am not happy when censorship wins, and I don't believe in winning battles via censorship... The way of fighting Holocaust deniers is with history and with truth.

Jeff Barak, editor of the Jewish Chronicle

It's actually quite a severe sentence - one that I think will surprise people. Of course the major hope has to be that it doesn't turn him into a martyr for the far right.
