In pictures: The Pope marks Easter
Pope John Paul II has been taking part in Easter celebrations in Rome, despite increasing health problems.
On Good Friday he was unable to walk in the Way of the Cross procession for the first time in 23 years, but still led the faithful in prayer.
But he had to leave it to others to carry the cross
But a foot washing ceremony proved too difficult
A wheeled platform helped the Pope to get around
