Paris memorial to Armenian genocide
The authorities in Paris have voted to erect a memorial to the genocide of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire. This follows the adoption by the French parliament on January the Eighteenth of a bill officially recognising the Armenian genocide -- a move that has brought strong protests from Turkey. The mayor of Paris, Jean Tiberi, said the memorial would take the form of a statue of the Armenian priest and composer, Komitas, who survived the massacres and died in France in 1935. He said it would be erected next year. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
