Paris memorial to Armenian genocide

The authorities in Paris have voted to erect a memorial to the genocide of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire.

This follows the adoption by the French parliament on January the Eighteenth of a bill officially recognising the Armenian genocide -- a move that has brought strong protests from Turkey.

The mayor of Paris, Jean Tiberi, said the memorial would take the form of a statue of the Armenian priest and composer, Komitas, who survived the massacres and died in France in 1935.

He said it would be erected next year.
