Saving Venezuela's national dog

Venezuela is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Spain.

President Hugo Chavez has long drawn parallels between his own movement and the 19th century revolutionary hero Simon Bolivar.

One symbol of the struggle for independence is the Mucuchi, Venezuela's national dog - Bolivar had one at his side when he was killed in battle.

Once threatened with extinction as a pure-breed by years of cross-breeding, a foundation has been established to preserve them.

Walter De Mendoza explains the attraction of the Mucuchi.
