Monday, November 1, 1999 Published at 22:02 GMT World: Americas Bush jumps out of harm's way ![]() The truck overturned and narrowly missed Mr Bush The leading Republican candidate in the US presidential race, Governor George W Bush of Texas, has escaped serious injury in an accident in the state capital, Austin. Mr Bush was out jogging around Austin's Town Lake when a truck on a nearby road sped out of control and overturned. A Bush spokeswoman, Mindy Tucker, said: "Apparently he heard something behind him, saw the oncoming truck and dove. He dove toward the water, and landed on concrete." Mr Bush was treated at the scene for minor bruises and abrasions to his right leg and hip. A Texas state trooper, Roscoe Hughey, who was trailing the governor on a bicycle, was hospitalised after being hit by debris that flew from the truck. 'Not suspicious'
The Texas governor is not planning to alter his campaign schedule because of the incident. He left Austin later on Monday for a campaigning trip through New Hampshire and was scheduled to have breakfast with voters there on Tuesday morning. Austin said they have not charged the truck driver and are investigating whether the trailer was overloaded. In a statement, Longhorn Disposal, a subsidiary of Houston-based Waste Management, Inc., which operated the truck, said the driver has worked for the company for 13 years and has a good driving record. Cherie Rice, a spokeswoman for Waste Management, said the truck "experienced a shifting of waste material." She added that the companies "regret this unfortunate incident and offer sincere apologies to the governor and his security officer". |
