Venezuelan plane crash kills 16
A military plane has crashed in a mountainous area of northern Venezuela, killing 16 people.

High-ranking military officers were among those who died in the crash, which happened about 20km (12 miles) north-west of the capital, Caracas.

The cause of the disaster was not immediately clear.

The plane had taken off from Los Teques, 30km (18 miles) south-west of the capital, and was headed for La Carlota airbase in the capital.

The Skytruck aircraft, which belonged to the National Guard, crashed just after 1100 local time (1500 GMT) near the town of El Junquito in a cloudy weather, officials said.

"There were 16 people travelling aboard.... It crashed into a mountain," Colonel Antonio Rivero, head of Venezuela's Civil Protection service, told Reuters news agency.

Rescuers are reported to have found no survivors at the crash site.

Inspector General of the National Guard Rafael Dubron Torres was on board the plane, Venezuela's interior ministry later said in a statement.
