Clinton urges speedy gun control

President Clinton wants tighter restrictions on the sale of guns

President Clinton has urged the House of Representatives to act quickly on gun control legislation.

Referring to recent attacks on high school students in Colorado and Georgia, he said Congress should enact the laws before the school year ends.

"No parent should have to fear sending a child to school," Clinton said in his weekly radio address to the nation.

No American should tolerate this level of violence against our children," he said.

Clinton: "I call on the House to take immediate action."
"There is no task more urgent. Every one of us has a role to play," Mr Clinton said. "Government must do more to protect our children from guns."

The US president praised the Senate for narrowly passing a gun bill on Thursday, calling it a turning point in efforts to tighten gun restrictions.

"I call on the House to take immediate action," Clinton said.

"I hope the House of Representatives will pass every one of these common-sense efforts that the Senate has passed to protect our children from guns."

"And I hope they'll do it before school lets out in June."

On Thursday, Mr Clinton met the students and the families of the victims of the massacre one month ago at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

In that attack, two teenage boys killed 12 fellow students and one teacher before taking their own lives.

In Thursday's attack, a 15-year-old shot and wounded six fellow students at Heritage High School in Conyer, Georgia.

The Senate on Thursday passed a sweeping juvenile crime bill that includes the first new firearms measures since the Republicans won control of Congress in the 1994 elections.
