Tragedy at Ghana football match

At least 100 people are reported to have been killed in crowd violence at a packed football match in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

Hospital officials say at least another 150 have been injured.

Trouble started five minutes from time, with Kumasi Asante Kotoko 2-1 down to local rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak.

Witnesses said there was a stampede after police fired tear gas to quell trouble between opposing supporters.

Those who died are believed to have been crushed to death. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.

Unconfirmed reports speak of hospital corridors crowded with dead and wounded, along with relatives frantically searching for loved ones.

Other recent tragedies

"I personally counted over 100 dead in one of the hospitals," said Komla Dumor, a presenter on Joy FM local radio station.

A senior Ghanaian Government official later said he had seen at least 50 bodies at one hospital alone.

Minister of Presidential Affairs Jake Obetsebi-Amptey was quoted as saying, "It is a great national tragedy.

"What is important now is to remain calm. It is a night for us to mourn and not a night to worsen an already bad situation with anger and impatience."

The disaster is the fourth at a football match in Africa in the past month.

Forty-three people were killed on 11 April at a stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Another stampede on 29 April killed eight people in Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On 6 May, fighting broke out at a match in Ivory Coast, killing one person and injuring 39.
