Emergency repairs have been carried out at the hotel
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson by police investigating a fire which severely damaged a Cardiff city centre hotel.

The man is in custody and being interviewed about the blaze at the Thistle Hotel early on Wednesday.

Fifty firefighters fought the blaze and up to 95 guests left the hotel for safety after the fire around 0100 GMT.

No-one was injured but police reported there was considerable water damage to the upper levels of the hotel.

The hotel's owners said the building suffered extensive damage to its second, third and fourth floors as well as the roof.

A full assessment will take place in the coming days following emergency roof repairs, they said.

The hotel is closed and staff have been contacting people with existing bookings.

A spokesperson for Thistle Hotels said: "We are aware that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the fire and will continue to assist the relevant authorities with their investigation."
