A plastic packaging factory in Flintshire is set to close with the loss of 70 jobs.

Rexam Plastic Packaging, on the Deeside industrial park, has entered into a 30-day consultation period with staff.

The company blames the proposed closure on the economic downturn, but it says there were some difficulties at the plant before the recession.

A spokesman for Rexam said: "The plant has been experiencing a decline in sales and is no longer sustainable."

"We will be offering our employees out-placement advice," he added.

The global firm has two other factories in the UK, in Milton Keynes and Wakefield, which produce beverage cans.

Its Welsh site makes plastic containers for the food industry.
