Flood works near completion
Ruthin floods
Ruthin has been flooded on several occasions
A defence scheme to protect a north Wales town flooded four times in four years is nearing completion, two years after residents were last forced out of their homes.

Residents living in Ruthin hope the measures to protect their homes will be in before winter's worst.

The project, which is 600,000 over budget, will divert water away from houses in a town last flooded in October 2001.

The total cost of the scheme has risen by more than 1m to 2.1m, but councillors have promised part of the scheme will be completed by 18 October.

The final scheme will be ready by the end of November.

June Jones, who has lived in Mwrog Street for 15 years, was forced to move out in 2000 for five months after severe flooding.

"It's taken too long. It's three years since the whole of this town was devastated," she said.

"I know they're working on it but we've still got that bit in between.

"A couple of months ago we had torrential rain and I couldn't believe how worked up I got."

It is believed the cost of the scheme has increased because initial tenders were sought before costs were finalised to ensure the scheme was completed as soon as possible.

Excess water

When the final costs were added up, variations to contracts, compensation, land acquisition prices and changes to the scheme from outside agencies pushed the bill up.

The new scheme takes excess water away from the Mwrog Street culvert, diverting it from the town, across fields and away from the houses.

Since 1998, there have been a number of separate floods resulting from problems with the culvert.

"This is the news that the people of Ruthin have been waiting for," said Denbighshire council leader Eryl Williams.

"They will no longer have to live with the fear of flooding."
