Thousands of people work on the industrial estate
A policing project to reduce crime on the Wrexham Industrial Estate has proved so successful it is now being used as a national model of excellence.

The estate - one of the largest in Europe with 550 hectares and thousands of employees - had suffered significant problems with burglary and theft prior to the initiative which was set up in February 2001.

The success of the scheme, which aimed to reduce crime by 25%, has been praised by the Home Office which funded the initiative.

"When we first arrived on the estate there were security officers at various buildings but they didn't liaise with each other," said PC Ian Massie from North Wales Police.

"This meant that criminals were able to move around the estate easily without being detected.

"We visited the businesses to offer free security advice and quickly realised that we needed to establish a community spirit if crime was to be reduced."

The policing project, which sees two officers based on the estate has reduced burglary by nearly 60% and theft dropped by 13%.

In an independent survey, 75% of people said they felt safer on the estate since the project started.

The scheme will now be rolled out across Wales, the first will be set up on the Deeside Industrial Estate in Flintshire.

The success of the project will be the subject of two Welsh Assembly best practice conferences to be held in north and south Wales next month.
