One of north Wales' oldest women has celebrated her 108th birthday.

Enid Vaughan Williams had a party with her friends and family at Hafod Y Gest Nursing Home in Porthmadog, Gwynedd where she lives.

Mrs Williams, who moved into the care home last year after suffering a short illness, said she has seen "big changes" during her lifetime.

Born in 1902, she has lived through the time of two world wars, five monarchs and 21 prime ministers.

On Saturday, Mrs Williams, known as Aunty Enid, was centre stage at a party which her family and friends helped to organise.

With a cake made by staff at the care home and one from her family, there was plenty to go around for the 40 or so guests that stopped by to wish her happy birthday.

Mrs Williams said: "In my younger days I was very happy, going to chapel, school, clubs...

"I feel alright really, only that the age is telling on me!"

She left school at the age of 15 and took on an apprenticeship at Mclean's milliners in Porthmadog.

Five years later, she left to help her mother run a grocery and clothing store in Penrhyndeudraeth while her father ran a butcher's shop in the village.

She later fell in love and married baker Elias Williams and the couple built a home in the area where she has always lived.
