Gav and Charl - now the animation

What really goes on behind the couple's closed doors ?
Singer Charlotte Church and her rugby star boyfriend Gavin Henson have a new look - as TV cartoon figures.

The celebrity couple are the latest targets for the Welsh-language satirical animation series Cnex

The producer of the comedy on S4C, which starts on Friday night, said the aim was to be "humorous without overstepping the mark".

Asked what the couple thought of the portrayal, Church's manager said: "We'll have to wait until we see it".

The show's animators are promising to reveal what goes on behind closed doors chez "Gav and Charl".

The Ospreys centre and his classical-turned-pop star girlfriend join a host other big names in the latest series of the surreal programme which is launched on Friday.

Singer Katherine Jenkins is another newcomer to the series which has already poked light-hearted fun at President Bush, Catherine Zeta Jones and Bryn Terfel among others.

The show which is subtitled in English casts a satirical - yet mostly affectionate - eye over contemporary Wales and beyond.

"The aim is to be humorous without overstepping the mark and so far no-one has complained about their Cnex alter-egos," said series producer Dylan Huws from Caernarfon-based production company Cmni Da.

"I think most people take it as a compliment."

The couple became an item in March as Henson was warming the hearts of Welsh fans with his performance in the Grand Slam winning side, and Church was unveiling her transformation form classical 'angel' to pop's 'crazy chick'.

Since then, the couple have been pursued by the paparazzi while the player provoked the wrath of many of his Lions and Welsh team-mates with his outspoken comments in a book about the tour down under.

How the clean-living Henson - famed for his immaculate appearance on and off the pitch - couples with the cigarette-smoking and party-loving Church is humorously tackled in the five-part series.

Clean-shaven Henson is captured applying lipstick by the Cnex animators while Church is presented, somewhat irreverently, with a cigarette and can in hand, sitting on the toilet.

"People like animations and if you add an element of satire it's a bonus," said Mr Huws.

"When choosing people to animate we try to think about famous faces who lend themselves naturally to satire."

Cnex is broadcast at 2130 GMT on S4C on Friday and repeated at the same time on Saturday.
