Blair casts cloud over Big Wedding II

posted by David | 1735 GMT |

Hot news from the campaign trail. Lembit Öpik, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, is to postpone his wedding. This election is getting serious.

Apparently, Lembit and his fiancée Sian Lloyd have been a little taken aback by the prime minister's decision to hold a general election in May.

This would have left the happy couple only five months to book the flowers, order the cake, fix the celebrity magazine and all the other chores associated with an everyday wedding.

Regular readers of Hello! magazine, like myself, may recall the couple sharing the plans for their Powis Castle dream wedding with us last February.

Sian revealed at the time: "We're planning to have the wedding in the first week of October, so we've got plenty of time to get everything right". Alas, there just wasn't enough time, even though Lembit told Hello! "my (election) bet is 5 May".

Lembit revealed the delay to reporters at Cardiff Airport. Lembit and Sian are not the only couple to have to delay their nuptials. The Prince of Wales had to postpone his marriage due to the death of the Pope.

"We've both had to delay our weddings," said Lembit. "It seemed that if His Royal Highness was delaying his big do then it was polite etiquette to do the same.

"But I'm still getting married in a castle - one thing Prince Charles didn't manage."
