Art buying plan inspires galleries

A scheme which has helped art collectors in Wales buy thousands of works has been so successful that the authorities in England are considering adopting it.

"Collectorplan" helps culture lovers buy art and ceramics made by living Wales-based artists from as little as 50 and as much as 2,000, with an interest-free loan.

More than 60 galleries subscribe to the scheme and in the 20 years it has been working, more than 20,000 items have been sold.

Iestyn Davies, head of communications for the Arts Council of Wales, said he was surprised it had taken its English counterpart so long to see the benefits for artists and the art market.

"I think they are adopting it because it's a success story.

"What we're seeing is that once people start buying art, the number of people who purchase multiple items, a number of work of art or ceramics, is increasing.

"So not only are people starting off by the scheme, but they more and use this a means of purchasing works of art.

"What we hope is that this is one consumer purchase that is going to appreciate rather than decrease in value over the years.

"I hope that this shows that Wales is a success story, at the forefront of developing arts policy."

The range of arts works which can be purchased under the scheme include paintings, silverware, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, prints, photographs and textiles.

However, not all the arts works in Wales are covered by Collectorplan.

When Lyndsy Phillips, from Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, painted a ram called Owen a number of psychedelic colours, he already had an owner.
