The woman who confronted Gordon Brown was told he had called her a "bigoted woman" by a TV producer.
The Labour leader has apologised to Gillian Duffy from Rochdale, for his comment, which was caught on a microphone.
Mrs Duffy, a life-long Labour supporter, had challenged Mr Brown on issues including immigration from eastern Europe and the national debt.
Her first comment on hearing about the remarks Mr Brown made was "you're joking".
