Tory leader David Cameron has accused the PM of "ineffective authoritarianism", arguing that the government's 42-day detention plans are both counter-productive and unnecessary.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown hit back, telling MPs: "I say in sorrow, rather than anger: it is no use opposition for opposition's sake. We have to take no risks with security."
Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said the proposal would be rejected by the House of Lords and challenged in the courts.
