Derek Wyatt

Date of birth

4 December 1949

Political profile

One of Labour's bevy of unexpected winners in 1997, Derek Wyatt founded the "Unlikely Lads and Lasses" group in commemoration.

He was returned with an increased majority in 2001.

He is a very active backbencher and a frequent boisterous speaker whose loyalty to Labour has not stopped him making critical speeches.

He has two over-riding parliamentary interests, sport and the internet.

He set up Parliament's All Party Internet Group and is something of an evangelist for its application in almost every aspect of life.

He has called for measures to increase the general level of internet access and has fought to widen ownership of the telecommunications infrastructure.

He has played rugby for England and from his position on the Commons culture, media and sport select committee he has called for a restructuring of sports management.

He is also a persistent critic of the length of parliamentary recesses, claiming that MPs are made redundant for long periods of every year.
