Peter Pike

Date of birth

26 June 1937

Political profile

Peter Pike's Commons career began in 1983 when he was elected for then-marginal Burnley.

He is a Labour party veteran and was a full time party worker in the 1960s, but has only sat on the frontbench briefly, between 1990 and 1994 when he served as a spokesman on rural affairs and housing.

Nonetheless, he is a respected parliamentarian who is extremely active in the less obvious "backstage" worlds of all-party groups and select committees.

Since 1997, he has chaired the Commons deregulation select committee.

He is on the mainstream left of the party, with an internationalist outlook and a particular interest in African affairs.

A former shop steward, he has a lingering attachment to many classic "Old Labour" attitudes.

He is a Christian socialist and opposed to Sunday trading. He is also something of a Eurosceptic and is a stalwart defender of first-past-the-post voting for Westminster.
