Christopher Cazenove: Your comments

Christopher Cazenove

BBC News website readers have been sending in their memories of British actor Christopher Cazenove, who was best known for his role as Ben Carrington in Dynasty.

The actor died after a "valiant battle" with septicaemia, his family said. He appeared in a wide range of television programmes, films and stage productions including The Duchess of Duke Street and Three Men and a Little Lady.

I remember Mr Cazenove from his theatre debut at the Perth Theatre in 1967, and later playing Hamlet at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, prior to coming to London and making it into the big time. I met him again in 1987, when he made a guest appearance at a poetry reading at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, where I was working as theatre manager. He remained the totally charming gentleman, that I first knew from those many years before. His is a tragic and untimely death and he will be sorely missed.

I worked with Christopher and he was a true gentleman. He was a dedicated actor who gave his all whatever the circumstance and he always had that twinkle of humour in his eyes.

Christopher Cazenove in The Duchess of Duke Street

I met Christopher Cazenove many years ago when he starred on Broadway in a short-lived play called Goodnight Fidel. I had became a big fan of his after seeing him in The Duchess of Duke Street, and I happened to be in New York when his play was running. I saw it and went backstage afterwards. I was lucky enough to meet both him and his then-wife, Angharad Rees (whom I liked after seeing her in Poldark). It's one of my favourite memories. I had my picture taken with each of them and they could not have been lovelier.

Christopher worked with The Young Americans in an event called Tarbell. We performed My Fair Lady, along with Susan Egan and Kevin Odekirk. He was such an inspiration. Every time I saw him, he was giving it his all, determined to get everything right for the audience. He was so passionate for his work. I know that I will never forget having the experience of working near him.

I conducted a private performance of "My Fair Lady" in Costa Mesa, California starring Chris as Professor Henry Higgins, a role he had performed brilliantly hundreds of times both in the UK and the US. It was an honour to work with him and a great pleasure to have known him. Everyone involved in the production is devastated by this tragic news. We have lost a noble, kind and generous spirit.

I am so sad to hear of Christopher Cazenove's death. Over the years I admired his talent and he will be forever Charlie in The Duchess of Duke Street, my favourite of his many roles. I send my deepest sympathies to his family.

By all accounts he was a gentleman. He was appearing in a play in Newcastle when someone in the audience, possibly from a newspaper, attempted to get a photograph of a mildly famous young female co-star during her nude scene. Cazenove shouted, "Stop that man," and halted the play until the man had been detained and the camera recovered. Legend.

He will be sadly missed. He was excellent back in the late 1980s alongside Carol Lynley in the Hammer House of Mystery And Suspense episode In Possession.
