Hundreds stranded after M1 alert
Hundreds of motorists were stranded on the M1 after a man threatened to jump from a bridge onto the motorway.

Police were called to Junction 29 of the motorway, in Derbyshire, during Christmas Day afternoon after a man was reported on a bridge.

Traffic was then halted northbound from Junction 28 and southbound from Junction 30.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital and has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: "We have now concluded the incident.

"We apologise to motorists for the delays. It was necessary to close both sides of the carriageway to ensure the safety of the man, our staff and other motorists."

Traffic moved slowly along the motorway for some time afterwards, but the AA reported no problems with the stretch by Christmas Day night.
