Diana charity fund tops £101m
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has raised more than £100m since her death in August 1997. More than £21m has been paid to causes she supported worldwide, benefiting the young, the homeless, victims of disease and disaster and the arts. The £21.5m announced by the fund was raised by donations from the public and from its own commercial activities.
But the lion's share of the money remains unspent. The fund still has £80m in the bank from fund-raising, and expects that by the end of this year it will have raised another £10m through commercial activities. The spokeswoman said they had chosen the theme of post-conflict work for international grants, to aid work for peace and reconciliation. "Landmines charities are continuing a theme the princess was involved with, but we have chosen to take that theme further," she said. Landmines charities, which this year have been given about £2m, are expected to receive more grants in future as part of the post-conflict theme. In the UK, the fund has focused on those charities which help young people, who have suffered loss - of a parent or sibling, of their childhood or home.
The biggest single donation went to the Elton John Aids Foundation, as the princess was very closely associated with Aids charities, as well as being a friend of the singer. Elton John's charity single, Candle in the Wind, which he sang at her funeral, raised £3m for the fund. 'Fund is about individuals' The Leprosy Mission, which was given a £900,000 boost, is opening a centre near New Delhi called The Diana, Princess of Wales Health Education and Media Centre, on Sunday. The fund spokeswoman said: "The projects are not just bricks and mortar, they are about individuals, but a housing association in Llamau, Wales has got a plaque.
Homeless groups, including the housing association in Wales, have received about £1.2m, and charities helping bereaved young people, young refugees and children with parents in prison were given nearly £2m. The fund's chief executive Andrew Purkis said: "The donations were very precious - they were a sign of people's affection for the princess and their desire that her work should be continued in some way. "I believe we will be able to reach out to many people for many years to come." |
