A previously portly pooch has been named pet slimmer of the year.

Beagle Megan found a new lease of life after winning the battle of the bones and shedding nearly a stone.

Megan, who is now a trim 28lbs, shares her title with former fat cat Toby - who lost 33% of his body weight after his owners decided he needed to diet.

Megan, who lives in Liverpool, and Toby, from Oxfordshire, were rewarded for their achievements by Vets in Practice star Emma Milne.

Success for the pets means their human owners can now look forward to spending 2,000 worth of holiday vouchers.

Megan and Toby have the chance to enjoy 500 worth of pet accessories and a free year's supply of food.

Megan and Toby follow in the paw steps of Pepper, a Labrador who lost more than 40% of his body weight in six months to claim last year's title.

Owner Esther Davis, from Kirby Lonsdale, in Cumbria, said Pepper was a four-legged Hoover who would wolf down anything he could reach - once eating two birthday cakes.

Pepper had tipped the scales at 11st (69kg) before starting his diet.
