Travel 'nightmare' hits London
Countryside marchers in St James's Street, central London
Some 20 roads were closed in London ahead of the march
Severe disruption is being felt on hundreds of routes throughout central London as the countryside march taking place in the capital draws to a close.

Travellers are being urged to avoid coming in to central London by road, with warnings that severe delays are to be expected.

Advice from Transport for London, which co-ordinates bus and tube services in the capital, is that the situation could last for some time on Sunday evening.

The whole of the capital has been affected by the road closures

Around 20 roads in central London were shut as the march began on Sunday morning, but many more have become congested during the day.

An adviser from Transport for London said: "It's a bit of a nightmare really and we cannot say how soon it will clear."

The main area affected by the march includes the route from Hyde Park corner, up Piccadilly to Green Park then past Whitehall and St James's Palace and ending at Westminster.

Worst affected

Another leg of the march starts at Blackfriars Bridge, taking the protesters down the Embankment, ending at Westminster Bridge.

Roads have been shut since early morning and diversions put in place at 0800 BST.

Those roads around the route are expected to remain closed until 2200 BST.

A travel adviser at Transport for London said: "Now is not the best time to come into London.

"The whole of the capital has been affected by the road closures in central London," he said.

Diversions

London's Tube network is so far unaffected, with a Sunday service operating as normal, he added.

Around 200 staff from London Buses have been drafted in to assist with diversions and helping passengers find alternative routes.

On the Tube, the Jubilee line will be suspended between Stratford and Canary Wharf and the Metropolitan line between Baker Street and Farringdon due to scheduled engineering works.

Up-to-date travel information can be found at Transport for London's website.
