Last-day winner for Sheringham
Sheringham sealed a great season for Manchester United
Aston Villa 0-1 Man Utd

Teddy Sheringham was the match winner on what may prove to be his United swansong.

The former England striker has yet to announce whether he plans to accept the club's offer of a new one-year deal.

His goal was all that Sir Alex Ferguson's reshuffled side needed against a Villa side who will need to show greater ruthlessness in front of goal against Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup final next Saturday.

We have established more records and until somebody breaks them we will hold them and that's good for the club

Sir Alex Ferguson
Former Villa striker Dwight Yorke, who was booed when he touched the ball, lined up in midfield for the champions alongside Phil Neville, while Danny Higginbotham made his first start in four months at left-back.

Villa had Ian Taylor back from injury - coming off the bench during the second half, while keeper David James was rested.

The match had a typical end-of-season feel although Paul Merson, who was named Villa's player-of-the-year before the match, brought the crowd to life with a great piece of skill.

United gave possession to Lee Hendrie, who back-heeled the ball to Merson and his 20-yard chip was expertly touched away by Raimond van der Gouw.

Carbone then lashed an effort wide on the left before Paul Scholes mustered United's first shot on target with a drive straight at Peter Enckelman in the Villa goal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's match and season came to an abrupt halt after a late challenge by Ugo Ehiogu, and he was replaced by Jordi Cruyff.

Carbone then shot narrowly wide from Merson's cross - the best effort of the match so far.

Ronnie Wallwork replaced Higginbotham at half-time and deployed him at right-back as Denis Irwin moved to the left.

Sheringham then missed a great chance after a through ball by Cruyff broke Villa's offside trap.

That close shave spurred Villa into action and Dion Dublin headed the ball goalwards only for Neville to make a goal-line clearance.

Giggs and Scholes both went close before Taylor's arrival, and a minute later, Sheringham's winner.

Villa could only half block Cruyff's cross and the ball broke to Sheringham who planted it left-footed into the corner of the net, although Enckelman managed to get a hand to the shot.

I will know next week if today's performance was one of people having their minds on that game rather than this one

Dublin almost snatched a point for Villa against his old club at the death with two efforts.

First he drove narrowly over before he crashed a header against the bar in the final minute.

But there was no denying record-breaking United their 11th successive league win, and even if they fell short of 100 goals they still ended the day 18 points clear.
