India crushed in Sharjah
![]() The South Africans barely raised a sweat
South Africa: 168-0 (29.2 overs). India: 164 all out (45.2 overs)
South Africa inflicted a crushing 10-wicket victory over India in the opening match of the Sharjah Cup. Hansie Cronje's men, who earlier dismissed India for 164 with five overs to spare, raced past their meagre total without loss in less than 30 overs.
Openers Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs were unbeaten on 71 and 87 respectively as South Africa made amends for their recent one-day series defeat at the hands of India.
Gibbs looked particularly fluent, hitting three sixes and nine boundaries. The ease with which South Africa romped home underlined just how poor the India batting had been. Only a record last-wicket stand between Ajay Jadeja and Javagal Srinath took them past the three-figure mark. Having elected to bat, India were left reeling on 89-8 after just 21 overs by the ferocious South African attack.
Makhaya Ntini and Steve Elworthy snapped up three wickets each until Jadeja and last-man Srinath stopped the rot with a record last-wicket stand of 62.
India's previous record in one-day cricket was the 53 shared by Ravi Shastri and Narendra Hirawai against West Indies at Gwalior in 1988. Jadeja was unbeaten on 43 when Srinath was finally caught by Gibbs off the bowling of Nicky Boje. India were in trouble from the third over when Shaun Pollock bowled Sachin Tendulkar (5) to leave India on 9-1. Skipper Sourav Ganguly stroked four sweetly-timed boundaries in his 27 before being caught by Boje off Jacques Kallis, who then removed Rahul Dravid for eight.
Ntini, recalled after missing the tour of India, then claimed a trio of wickets, dispatching Mohammad Azharuddin (7), Sunil Joshi (24) and Agit
Agarkar (1) to finish with three for 36.
Elworthy added to Indian woes with a double-strike in his second over, then sent back Anil Kumble on his way to taking three for 17, before Jadeja and Srinath provided their late but futile flourish. India now play Pakistan, who make up the third team in the triangular tournament played annually in the United Arab Emirates.
