Raymond Barneveld kisses the world championship trophy

Top seed Raymond Barneveld has won the Embassy World Darts Championship in a gripping two-hour final.

Barneveld, a Dutch postman, picked up 40,000 prize money as he became the first European outside Britain to take the crown.

He beat Welshman Richie Burnett 6-5 in a tie-break 11th set, which he won by four legs to two to gain revenge for a defeat by Burnett in the 1995 final.

It was the second-longest final on record and as Barneveld finally took the match he fell to his knees and burst into tears.

Afterwards Burnett, who collects 20,000, said: "I felt I should have won it but I missed a lot of doubles at vital times. Raymond kept banging them in the whole game."
