Baker sets new 50 metre record

Zoe Baker: "I won't be nervous because I know I am swimming well"

Britain's Zoe Baker set a new European record at the European Championships in Istabul on Thursday to win her 50m butterfly semi-final.

City of Sheffield star Baker broke her own mark of 31.52 seconds, this time finishing in 31.43, while Holland's Inge de Bruijn also set a new standard, clocking 58.92 to take her 100m butterfly semi-final.

Both swimmers are favourites to take gold in their events.

Baker still believes she can pull out a little more to up her performance if she needs to in the final.

"I thought I would have to swim a decent heat just to make the final. It was good until half way, but I could improve it by a few tenths at the finish," she said.

"I won't be nervous tomorrow because I know I am swimming well. I wasn't nervous until I got on the blocks, and then my legs started shaking.

"I wasn't thinking about the time - I just let it happen. It's not the time that matters most to me - I want to win the gold medal. If I get that tomorrow I will have got what I came here for. I think I have already surprised a few people."
