The England midfielder David Beckham: "You know 2-0 it's not a large margin but it's nice"

Beckham said he had been under strict instructions to keep his cool in the first-leg and to stick to his defensive duties.

But he said England's 2-0 lead would allow Keegan to give him a free reign in the return leg and inflict maximum damage on the Scots.

"I knew I was on one yellow card and did not want to miss the game on Wednesday," said Beckham.

"I was aware of that and was cautious of whether to tackle or not. Hopefully on Wednesday I will be able to be more relaxed.

"I'd like a bit more freedom to get forward but if the defence need helping out then i'll be back there to do that."

Beckham had a quiet game at Hampden by his standards but it was his pinpoint cross which allowed Paul Scholes to nod home England's second.

Beckham urged England fans to raise the roof at Wembley as Scotland's followers did so vociferously at Hampden.

"When they sung the national anthem I can honestly say I have never heard anything like it in my life before.

"A few of us were amazed by it. Hopefully it will be the same for us at Wembley.

"It's not over yet. 2-0 is not a large margin but it is nice. We are two goals ahead but they can easily disappear in the space of a few minutes."

Meanwhile there were encouraging reports from the England's camp over the fitness of David Seaman.

The Arsenal keeper, who made a terrific save from Kevin Gallacher in the first leg, is set to shake off a calf strain and start the game ahead of Nigel Martyn.
