T in the Park to stay at Balado

Kasabian have been confirmed as one of the headliners for 2010

Music festival T in the Park will remain in Kinross-shire until at least 2012, it has been announced.

Perth and Kinross Council have given organisers DF Concerts a new three-year licence for the event, held at a disused airfield in Balado since 1997.

DF Concerts have also been given permission to allow 5,000 more people to camp at the festival, although overall capacity will remain at 85,000.

Kasabian are the only headline act to be announced so far for 2010.

The festival begins on 8 July, and organisers have said early bird tickets that went on sale in December were sold out within hours of their release.

A special meeting of Perth and Kinross Council licensing committee considered DF Concerts' application.

Torrential rain

A council spokeswoman said the campsite will now cater for 25,000 people on the Thursday evening - 5,000 more than previous years.

Entertainment will be provided on both nights to stop people spilling out into the surrounding areas.

A report by council chief executive Bernadette Malone, considered by councillors, read: "The 2010 event will be broadly similar to past years and feature a wide selection of bands, entertainment and catering venues.

"It is intended to continue to open the campsite from Thursday preceding the event.

"This is one of a raft of measures aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the run-up to the event by extending the arrival period."

The campsite was opened on a Thursday for the first time in 2008 to spread the arrival of festival-goers after torrential rain and the heightened terror alert in 2007 caused chaos around Kinross-shire.

T in the Park has been held annually in Scotland since 1994. It is named after its main sponsor, the brewing company Tennents.

It was originally held at Strathclyde Park, but since 1997 has been held at Balado.
