Bill McLaren was intensely proud of his hometown of Hawick where he played rugby for the first XV until serious illness cut short his career

McLaren's distinctive Borders voice became synonymous with BBC's coverage of rugby both on radio and television

Bill McLaren made the move to television in 1959 and continued to combine his duties with his role as a PE teacher for many years

His final commentary came in 2002 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff for a clash between Wales and Scotland
