The Wigtown Festival is now in its 11th year

Annual festival celebrations are getting under way in Scotland's national book town. Wigtown Book Festival celebrates its "11th edition" with a range of writers to appeal to all literary tastes. The proceedings get under way on Friday in the south west Scotland town and run until 4 October. More than 170 events will include appearances from Iain Banks, Christopher Brookmyre, Roddy Doyle, Irma Kurtz, Nick Nairn and Kenny Logan. Festival director Adrian Turpin said the event continued to grow in stature. "I think our profile outside of Dumfries and Galloway is greater than it has ever been," he said. He added that visitors were now being drawn to the event from across Scotland and the rest of the UK. Mr Turpin said that by attracting people from outside the region it could provide a financial boost to the area. "Ever since it started one of its aims has been economic regeneration," he said. "It was started as part of the book town project to revive the town."
