Firm chosen for Marischal HQ work

Marischal College and Aberdeen City Council sign
Aberdeen's historic Marischal College is a Category A-listed building

A firm has been chosen to transform the historic Marischal College into Aberdeen's new council headquarters, it has been announced.

Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd has been awarded the £39.7m building contract.

Aberdeen City Council said the total capital expenditure required for the "most exciting project in Scotland" was now £68.3m.

Work on Marischal College will begin in the summer and is expected to create more than 100 jobs for local builders.

Council leader Kate Dean said the hope was the local authority and the public of Aberdeen would get a building of which they could all be proud.

The firm is expected to complete the contract on the Category A-listed Marischal College in spring 2011.
