Farmed salmon exports 'increased'

Farmed salmon
Most farmed salmon was exported to Europe

More than 13 million farmed salmon were exported from Scotland last year, according to the Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation (SSPO).

It said the figure represented a 24% increase in exported fish compared with 2008.

SSPO said 65,480 tonnes of salmon were sent to 55 countries. The majority went to Europe, with notable sales in France, Belgium and Germany.

Fish were also sold in the US, Canada and the Far East.

Scott Landsburgh, SSPO chief executive, said: "Salmon is the largest food export from Scotland.

"It has established a substantial overseas market, worth over £220m per annum."
