Sergeant wins top porridge prize

Sgt MacLeod makes porridge for troops on a daily basis

An army cook has won the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Strathspey.

Sergeant Coleen Hayward MacLeod, originally from Stornoway, Western Isles, has served in the armed forces for 18 years.

She is in charge of making porridge on a daily basis for up to 400 troops from the 1st Royal Irish Regiment stationed at Fort George, near Inverness.

Sgt MacLeod said she had not expected to win.

She said: "There was some very strong competition and a lot of very good professional chefs taking part in the championship.

"I just didn't expect to do so well."
