Ice cap team close to finish line

A team of adventurers, including a woman who is paralysed from the chest down, are days away from completing a journey across Greenland's ice cap.

Karen Darke, from Grantown on Spey, and five others are so far ahead of schedule they do not know if they will be able to get a flight home.

They were due to fly out on 14 June, but the team could finish on 7 June.

Karen, 34, is sitting on skis and using arm-power and ski poles to cover the 372 miles (600km).

Her blog - an online diary - is being carried on the Highlands and Islands Enterprise Careers Scotland website.

'Bumpy bits'

There are also blogs by the other team members, including Anna McCormack who revealed in her entry for 30 May that the expedition was just over a week away from the end.

She said: "It is now looking hopeful for the 7th June."

Anna added: "I have asked my mom to try to contact the Air Greenland marketing people as I can't get through to them to inquire about availability of seats on the plane from Kangerlussuaq to Heathrow for the 7th rather than the 14th."

Kangerlussuaq on the west coast was known as Bluie West Eight during its time as an American military base.

Anna said Karen had been doing well "apart from a few bumpy bits and a few falls".

"We had trouble keeping up with her most of the time," she said.

The expedition, called By Hands and Feet Greenland, began almost a month ago.

Karen was a keen runner and mountaineer before she was paralysed in a rock-climbing accident while she was at university.

Before the Greenland expedition, she kayaked in Alaska and hand-cycled the length of Japan.

The team of six aims to raise money for the charity Interventure.

It provides and develops opportunities for disabled people to participate in adventure sports and outdoor activities.
