A much-maligned new town has been given a makeover with the opening of a 40m shopping centre.

Cumbernauld's new Antonine Shopping Centre opened its doors on Wednesday as the town celebrated its 50th birthday.

The 350,000 sq ft development was opened by North Lanarkshire Provost Thomas Curley at 1030BST.

Developers said the centre, with 40 shops and about 3,000 town centre parking spaces, would create 600 jobs and attract major high street names.

The work and the commitment shown by the many people involved cannot be under-estimated, and the creation of almost 600 jobs bears this out

Gerry McElroy spokesman for Campsies Centre Cumbernauld, the firm tasked with regenerating the town centre, said: "Cumbernauld town centre has come in for a lot of stick over the years but in recent times it has come on in leaps and bounds.

"The Antonine Centre marks the biggest project to date. In the year the town celebrates its 50th anniversary, there could be no better symbol of the rebirth of Cumbernauld."

The new centre forms part of a phased development of Cumbernauld town centre. In January 2004, the first phase of a 100,000 sq ft supermarket development was completed.

Retail analyst CACI estimated that the centre would increase expenditure in the town by 84%, which equates to 175m.

Great success

Retail business consultant FSP has estimated a 166% rise in retail sales from 45m to 119m, once the shopping centre opens.

Mr Curley said: "The work and the commitment shown by the many people involved cannot be under-estimated, and the creation of almost 600 jobs bears this out.

"It's a real pleasure to see the centre opening during the town's 50th anniversary year, and I congratulate London and Regional Properties, Campsies Centre Cumbernauld and all their partners on the very great success of all their efforts."

The new centre links to the Cumbernauld Centre and phase 4 shopping centre, which benefited from a multi-million pound refurbishment in December 2004.

Construction of the Antonine Centre began in January 2006.
